Who is Your God?

If we only get to claim belief in gods we actually worship and worship is the use of resources to orbit around something/someone… who would your gods be?

I spend time working. I spend time sleeping. I spend time watching television. (By the way, have you seen "Ted Lasso?" SO GOOD.) I eat a lot of good food. I laugh a lot with my friends. I think, I write, I edit.

In the midst of all that, I spend a lot of time and energy trying to channel the presence of Jesus. I do this by shutting up. I do this by pausing mid-action and trying to remember him. I do this by considering what he might think or feel about my upcoming decisions. I let go of things that are distracting so that I can have more of him. I celebrate the things I have because that seems an appropriate response to gifts from him.

Apparently I have a lot of gods in my life, but I want my only God to be Jesus.

But I think I will dive in now......one of my gods was my children. As a homeschool family for a time, I fell into a pattern of everything orbiting around the kids. How could it ever be wrong to be super dedicated to them and their education and well-being? I think things turned out very well for them after all the time and effort and relentless pursuit of excellence in education, and athletics and being certain to not fall short in "socialization." But looking back, that didn't turn out so well …
